The Win?? machines often work well when all the software and hardware
comes prepackaged, but not so well when one adds hardware or software.
Furthermore, they do crash, apparently at random. 

Linux has a better reliability record,  and now comes pre-packaged with
the hardware from several companies, including IBM.  Living as we do in
Silicon Valley, we have been impressed at how many people are moving to
it. Corel now has its office suite running on Linux; we plan to give up
on WIN95 when our son finishes classes that require it, and we have the
money to buy the new Corel Word Perfect Suite.

Sorry to contribute to the off topic thread. Problem is that my favorite 
toys are cameras and computers, and I feel the same way about Microsoft 
as I do about point-and-shoot print cameras: "OK if that's the best you
can do."
