Boris,

I have never stooped to using AOL for Internet access, but there may be another explanation for the crappiness of your friend's display.  If he has his computer set up to display only 256 colors, it'll dither your graphics to simulate the colors that the images contain.  That creates a mottled and unappealing appearance.

Try going into the Windows Control Panel's Display dialog and see how many colors he's displaying.
