I recently bought my wife an Olympus Infinity Stylus Epic DLX (that's
a mouthful) camera for her birthday. This is a relatively cheap
(about $100 from B&H) very small and light, autofocus, autoexposure,
fixed focal length point&shoot with a tripod socket. There is a
built-in flash (that can be disabled), but no accessory shoe (use the
built-in flash to fire a slave). It has a very good reputation for
quality. I've been seriously considering buying a second one for twin
35mm stereo rig. It has the advantage of still being manufactured,
but the disadvantage of not having a cable release socket. I have
seen cable release adapters in the Porter's catalog for cameras
without sockets (an elastic band with a threaded bit on it). You can
get a remote for the camera, but I don't know if one remote will
reliably fire two cameras in sync. I'm also not sure if they can be
electronically synced.
