P3D VM light leaks

The light leak on the VM Personal only happens when the shutters have
been fired.  Winding the camera puts the blades in a position where
the light cannot get through.  This is a design flaw and I hear it is
quite common.  Another VM shooter recommended the wind after each shot
to me and I haven't had any problems with the light leaks since.  But
back to the original question: is it safe to alter the shutter speed
once it is wound?  The shutter speed mechanism is not like than on a
regular camera.
