I just got out of the hospital following a knee replacement so I probably
missed several days of "chit-chat " about the Stereo Graphic and their
Depthmaster focusing system. I have had one for almost 20 years and
consider it a nice little point and shoot camera & ideal for a beginner.
Notice I wrote Consider.
I had never taken any stereo slides until 1985 when I bought a TDC 716
projector for $5 (FIVE) at a yard sale here in Columbus. The first of
the few stereo slides I have made were shot with a Stereo Graphic and
some of them are still being accepted in the International stereo slide
exhibitions. This brings me to the conclusion that the judges don't seem
to mind the Depthmaster focusing system,or that it doesn't affect them
that much
I ran an little test in 1987 to check out the Depthmaster system in a SSA
folio. I made BW (what else) stereo cards featuring my Basset Hound
Rudolf in my back yard. One card was made with Realist negatives and
the 2d card was made with Stereo Graphic negatives. Both images were
made from more or less the same spot (No I did not measure) with Rudolf
beneath a swing set. About the only difference was that Rudolf was
laughing on one card and was serious on the other. I asked the SSA folio
members (35 of them in those days) to list their choice as to which image
was made with what camera. 4 out of 35 got it right.
What does this prove - Absolutely Nothiing!!! I am just reporting on my
experience with the camera.
If you like the pictures that the Stereo Graphic produces then you will
be happy using the camera. The slow shutter speed is somewhat of a
drawback when you are trying to stereograph Rangers running thru a
Bayonet Assault Course, but you can learn to live with it.
