I can't agree that people were fundamentally any different years ago
regarding their willingness to take on the task of mounting their own
slides vs sending them out and "tolerating" the inacuracies of
commercial processing. I don't think you can generalize about the
waning or waxing of a "do it yourself" attitude. Certainly not over a
period of the last twenty years as has been suggested. That was 1979
for God's sake! Practically the Reagan era already. People were no
different in this respect. You might make a case for a 40-50 year
period. The advent of television probably put a dent in the number of
people who have real hobbies. As for "tolerating" inferior results,
just take a look at some of the surviving slides from the 1950's that
crop up occasionally. Most of them were pretty inferior.
