"Dial M for Murder" (1954) was definitely shot in 3-D, I saw the 3-D version in Ann Arbor, MI
a few years back.
It is unfortunate that by its release, 3-D movies had gained an unsavory reputation as both an
excuse to peddle an otherwise lousy movies, and as a source of headaches for moviegoers, due to some
projectionists' inability to align the projection equipment properly.
Prints (that is, positive transparent footage for presentation in theaters) of "Dial M for
Murder" were in fact made available in 3D or 2D, with most theaters showing the 2D version. Some,
however, did present the 3D version, and which version you saw most likely depended on which metro
area you lived in.
One regional chain, however, did a test by showing 2D in some theaters and 3D in others, and
concluded that moviegoers preferred 3D. This came to late to save the budding stereo sight cinema,
however.
BTW, "Dial M for Murder" was fairly easy to shoot in 3D, as virtually all of the scenes are on
indoor sets. The very few outdoor scenes are actually in 2D.
