Ray Zone responds:

In 1984, Andre de Toth, the director of House of Wax told me that the
paddle ball sequence in the film was only included at the insistence of
producer Bryan Foy. De Toth himself fought vigorously to keep it out of
House of Wax but did not prevail. He felt that the sequence was gimmicky
and gratuitous in that it had nothing to do with the narrative of the film.

A similar example of a gratuitous 3-D sequence can be seen in the rarely
screened Universal film "The Glass Web," directed by Jack Arnold who also
directed "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" and "It Came From Outer
Space" in 3-D. In "The Glass Web," protagonist John Forsythe takes a
leisurely walk across the backlot of a television studio where various
implements of production are thrust off the screen at the viewers. The
narrative would not suffer one bit with this sequence cut since it is
absolutely gratuitous and is only included for the sake of 3-D. Visually,
of course, it's great.
