P3D Re: Dial M

I haven't seen it myself, from your description, I'd say
that it's exactly what 3D films *should* be. It should just
happen to have depth like it should just happen to have color
and happen to have sound -- with focus on the plot and character
development (etc). Having things stuck out at the audience drives
me crazy if done purely for 3D-effect's sake.<
Unfortunately, what a 3D film "should be" and what the general public
(probably very much represented by the original poster who found the film
disappointing) wanted are two different things. The public clearly believed
that any 3D film must have a raging Indian (pardon me, a disaffiliated
Native American) flinging fiery arrows at the camera every five minutes or
it was no good. The usual reason given for the failure of films like Dial M
and Kiss Me Kate is that the 3D cycle was dying out, but I think a certain
amount of blame has to be laid at the feet of films that tried too hard to
be what 3D "should be" and simply didn't "deliver the goods" by assaulting
the camera like the public expected.
