You won't sophisticate me, I'm not too much of a jejune sophisticate to
admit that I love the stuff flying out of the screen.
As to Dial M, I saw it recently. I've heard all the stories about Mr.
Hitchcock's reluctance to work in 3D, but I think he actually enjoyed it.
The film has a lot of puckish humor re: 3D. He tantalizes you, just as
a cane is about to fly off the screen it stops, lots of nearly 3D "comin'
at ya" scenes. Sort of like SUSPICION in a way. Then at the end there
is the one really important scene that pops off the screen, I'll just
call it the key sequence, for those who haven't seen it.
It isn't off the screen sequences that make or break 3D movies, it's
scripts. People always single out Dial M and Kiss Me Kate as wonderful
and natural. Well, there is a lot of self-conscious 3D in Kiss Me Kate,
rent the flat version and see, but with a script largely based on
Shakespeare and with songs by Cole Porter it could have all the plates
and other flying objects the director cared to include and still be
great.
Good scripts will prevail. If the Godfather was in 3D it would not be
less of a movie if an occasional Chianti bottle flew over your head.
Shakespeare in Love wouldn't suffer if you got poked with a quill once in
 a while.
Hamlet cries out to be done in 3D. The ghost could float over the heads
of the audience, there are lots of good sword swinging scenes, Yorick's
head could be floating inches from your nose. Perhaps Hamlet could
regain his mirth.
"Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished."
