I think it depends on the film advance mechanism in the film recorder, and
whether you could break the pattern down into non-overlapping units that
fit within discrete exposed film lengths.  For example, if the film
recorder models a regular 35mm advance mechanism, than the VM or whatever
other sized images would have to fit in to the 8 perf. rectangle without
overlap.  (Theoretically, you could overlap by exposing part of the frame
on one stretch of film, and part on the next, but I don't know if the
registration of the film recorder would be good enough to handle that
seamlessly.

If you could break down the pattern into units which correspond to the film
recorders advance, then it might be as simple as making a single image
which contains 4 VM frames or whatever.
