Since all automatic printers at 1-hour labs that I have experience with use 
matrix weighting, the first/last prints can be very light (two unexposed 
neighbors) and the second/second-to-last prints can be a bit light (one 
unexposed neighbor).  To avoid the problem with the first and second prints 
(#1 and 3 images), just make sure that the throw-way images at the start of 
the roll are properly exposed.  Then just hope that the last two photos 
aren't keepers (or exhibition quality).  If they are, the lab will usually 
reprint them, for free, matching the settings printed on the back of their 
perfectly exposed right image counterparts.
