P3D Salvator Dali
In reference to Dali's stereo paintings:
I was walking down the main drag in Honolulu in 1982 with my stereo
camera when I was approached by a local shopkeeper. "Is that a stereo
camera?", he asked. When I replied in the affirmative, he quickly
whisked me into his shop. "Come here", he exclaimed excitedly, "You
must see this stereo painting by Salvator Dali". He showed me the
painting (pair) which I judge to be about 20" X 50" or so. each. His
problem as he explained was he did not have a good viewing system. It
was too difficult for me to free view at the time and he offered me
a set of prisms put together with masking tape. I was able to view
it adequately. The image was a sort of crucifixion scene, with the
figure on the ground. There was a blurry section on thelower left
hand corner of the image, after all, remember he did this all by hand,
no instrumentation to my knowledge.
He admitted to me that this was a litho copy of the original which he
told me was in Northridge, CA. When I got home I investigated further
and my best information was that the original was not in CA but in
Munich, Germany. I think he quoted the price at that time at $3000. I
have heard a later price of $4500. I have never seen the image
elsewhere.
