P3D Re: ambient/flash

In digest 3292, George writes, in part:
<< For example, if the ambient exposure is f16
at 1/100 (full sun with 100 ASA film) and the flash needs f5.6 to put
light in the foreground, what is the camera going to do? Obviously, a
second exposure at f5.6 will overexpose the background. Any words of
wisdom on this? >>
Part of this will depend on the flash to subject distance. If you are close
enough, you could actually get f16 (although you probably wouldn't want it).
At more reasonable distances, remember that 1/100@xxx equals 1/800@xx,6 (both
are abt. EV 15). I don't know the Hexar/S1's top shutter speed but it could
certainly make a single exposure at a high enough speed to allow a reasonable
aperture for a flash of this power.
Fill flash usually looks best a couple o'stops less than the ambient setting
anyway, so a distance that allows f8 would be (as we here in the Nation's
Capitol say) "close enough for government work".
