K.C. Metro Photographer's Assn. first Stereo Division meeting, is
history! I was totally pleased when ten 3D fans showed up at my Creative
Stereography Studio last Saturday for our first get together! I had
asked folks to bring samples of their photography, 3D gear and what they
like to collect thinking we would have time to be able to talk about and
view all this stuff! As it turned out, it took all three hours for us to
just to go around the group introducing ourselves and our respective 3D
backgrounds and still didn't get to everyone! (sorry Carol!)
Carol Mitchel is one of KCMPA oldest members (12 years) and a totally
valuable "idea" person! Her 3D technique is single camera "cha-cha" and
has many successfull pairs under her belt!
Darren Gunderson and wife Shelley drove in from Junction City, KS (3
hrs)to be with us. Darren teaches science to jr. high school kids and is
introducing them to the thrills of 3D photography! He works in realist
format and showed some wonderfully artistic stereo pairs of views from
the Flint Hills area in Kansas! We found out Darren has a realist
projector and he will be bringing it to future meetings!
Bill Coil from Lawrence, KS is our "hacker guy"! He brought and showed
two ingenious 3D inventions of his own design! First, a finely crafted
maple wood sliding stage made for focusing macro shots and by turning
the camera perpendicular to the sliding motion, he creates a slide (up
to ten inches separation) for single camera stereo pairs! The other was
an ingenious 12"x12" plywood tilting table (6 degrees) to be used on a
copystand for macro single camera stereo pairs! Bill is retired from a
profession where he was employed to do micro stereo photography!
Dave Williams runs a WalMart photo lab in Kansas City, KS and has
several years experiance shooting realist format. He brought and showed
some excellent 3D fall foliage views! Dave brought his friend and boss,
Craig to the meeting. Craig was our only "newbie"! By the the time the
meeting was over we had him totally pumped up and equiped (Kodak stereo
camera w/ flash) to go out and shoot the world in 3D!!
Brad Richmond from Overland Park, KS is a video photographer at a local
(KCMO-TV) station, works in realist format and produces 3D websites on
the internet! One of his own, <http://www.doubledogs.com/views/snow.htm>
I'm sure Brad's experiance will prove to be invaluable to our new group!
Brad is a regular reader on the Photo 3D list and posts occasionally.
Mike and Janet Saunders from Pleasant Hill, MO are now doing full time
professional 3D photography! Working in realist and ViewMaster format,
they specialize in shooting blues and jazz musicians! (It seems these
entertainers just go wild over 3D photos of themselves in action!) Let's
wish these two much success in this endeavor!! Mike is also an avid
Photo-3Der!
Last, but not least is our resident "collector"! David Vogel of Belton,
MO has not missed the trade fair at the NSA convention in years!! David
brought photos of his collection (3D gear and stereo views). His says
his specialty is "collecting on a budget"! He's very interested in
starting to create his own stereo photography and joined us for tips on
how to get started!
Well, I just couldn't help bragging about what a great, diverse, group
of folks we have to start our 3D club! Hope I havn't bored you with all
the details! I'm just thrilled with what has turned out to be a
successful begining for the KCMPA Stereo Division! Thanks to all for the
wonderfull kickoff!!
Thanks also to Jon Golden of 3D Concepts for sending us the RBT
literature and free RBT mounts! These givaways went over great at
meeting!!
John Baird (co-chairman) K.C. Metro Phtographers Association!!
