I have had this problem with my Fed for sometime although it does not
happen on every occaision. I have not been able to make a permanent repair
but the problem seems to be with the sliding strip of metal which is the
catch and which is bent over at right angles at the top of the camera. This
is meant to engage with the rewind knob when it is pulled up so that the
strip moves up and releases the back but sometimes it fails to do this. The
strip is visible with the back closed because there is quite a large gap at
the edge and I find that if I push in a thin blade to press the strip in
before pulling up the rewind knob it usualy releases the back first time.
If not I just have to try again and I try to take a suitable tool with me
on trips. P.J.Homer
