No doubt George is thinking of digital recording. I'm sure he knows
that at the present time the resolution of silver halide based film
far surpasses what we can do with digital cameras.
As for the future, I remember some predictions from when I worked
for a company that made hard disk drives for IBM mainframe computers.
These held about 3 gigabytes, cost about $35,000, and used platters
that were 14 inches in diameter.
The predictions at the time were that the limits of magnetic recording
were close to being reached, and the next wave would be optical storage.
To see how accurate they turned out to be, to my left on my desk is an
old PC computer to which I added a 2.3 gigabyte hard disk, with 3.5 inch
platters, which cost me about $150 the year before last.
Digital cameras are nice, but film has been improving steadily since I
first used ASA 10 Kodachrome a few years ago. The results aren't in yet!
