Shipping delays happen within continental boundaries as well.

I think some of the charges one pays are for STORAGE!

When shipping overseas, it may be worth considering DHL and
the like since they also provide "tracking" of parcels as well
as speedier delivery - that way one can tell precisely when
and where the parcel was lost ;-)
