I concur with the esteemed Rev. Chas. The apostrophe (') is used to
denote a possessive (e.g. "George's collection") or a contraction (e.g.
"doesn't", "can't"). The one exception I can think of is with the
pronoun "it", where "it's" is the contraction of "it is" (as used
correctly by the Rev. in his reply), but "its" is the possessive form
(i.e. "belonging to it"). Not unlike "his" and "hers" in this respect.
English often seems to have more exceptions than normal cases.
