Pictures of this sort are not shot with very short shutter openings,
but rather with very short flash durations. If one is using SLR's,
the shutter speed has to be long enough that the whole curtain is
open at the same time - often 1/60 of a second. Thus synching the
two cameras is easy; the problem is getting a very intense and
short flash. A few years ago (when I last read about these things)
an intense electric spark was used, rather than an electronic flash
tube.
