This came up recently in one of the newsgroups I read (which I
unfortunately can't remember). Trademarks and servicemarks (both
notmally shown as superscripts of their respective abbreviations) do
not require registration. Use of "registered trademark", or the
r-in-circle symbol (the ASCII (R) is not valid), requires proper
registration (with the US Patent & Trademark Office). This
