Interesting post and very good theories regarding the rest of
the message.
When I saw this part it was very apparent the clip wasn't
from 1903, it looked too good. I don't know how they expected
us to believe this! The March issue of SCSC mentions it was
a digital reproduction.

That makes alot of sense. On a vaguely similar note, I noticed
in one part of E3D, there was an object that was apparently
moving closer (3-D wise) toward the audience. The interesting
thing was that the image overlap of the object was constant. It
was set for the screen the whole time while it seemed to move
closer. The the only cue was the size growing larger. I'm not
sure how the apparent(?) stereo depth cue of it coming closer
was done. It could be that the surrounding space receded?
