I think there was supposed to be a fixed offset (a stop or two, I forget)
from the hand-measurement.  Also supposedly, everybody's hand (*PALM* side)
has about the same reflectivity, even if the other side may differ significantly.

Or so I recall -- from the olden days (not that long ago, but I haven't used
that trick for some time).
