Hi Dan,

I don't have the Scanmaker 5 but do have the Scanmaker X6 with the
optional transparency adapter. This is really a 600 dpi flatbed scanner
(it says 600x1200, but used the smaller number) that you can get a
florescent lid (which turns off the scanning light) for. For scanning in
photos for a web page, it works well enough. (not bad considering it's only
a few hundred dollars) If you want scans for work in photoshop/printing or
something, then I think you need a dedicated film scanner, something with
>2500 dpi resolution.

The best thing I like about the microtek scanners is that they have very
good colour balance (both with reflective materials and transparencies,
I've purchased both a microtek for home and at work). I've used other
brands of scanners which have big problems with this.

Anyways, I whipped up a rough web page with some of the scans from an
Scanmaker X6 with transparencies from a realist. I forgot I had scanned in
the images long time ago. I left the images the original size, so you can
downloaded and see how fuzzy they are if you view them at 1:1 zoom. They
are shown at about 1:3 on the web page, where they look sharp!

The web page is at: http://www.ryerson.ca/~v7chan/stereo_scans.html

Best is to bring in some materials to the store where you are buying it
from and try out the machine.

Hope this helps,
			Vincent.
