P3D Re:

Peter,

Thanks for your reply on the Teco-Nimslo. I'm quite frustrated with
my normal Nimslo right now because of the exposure control problems.
When I first got it I found it very accurate, but not any more. I have
been told that all Nimslos underexpose and that they tend to underexpose
more with time as the meter cell gets tired. I have also noted what
seems to be a varying response to different colors (very warm light
produces more underexposure. Since I'm already getting only 18 shots
on a 36-exposure roll, bracketing is not an attractive alternative.
Therefore the inquiry about the Teco-Nimslo. I don't really know
of anyone I can take the Nimslo to for repair, even if they could
get the parts, like the metering cell. Technical Enterprises still
has Tecos for sale, but would it be worth it?

I'm still aware of the FED, and have gotten the FED repair manual
that Steve Berezin is offering. It is interesting but doesn't seem
to shed a lot of light on the subject. Perhaps the camera is less
intimidating when you actually take it apart, but I really don't
want to do that if I don't have to.

One thing that concerns me about the FED is that the only lens test
I've ever seen did not include any results at f/2.8 and f/4. This
is discouraging as I've thought one advantage the FED had over the
Nimslo was the ability to shoot in dimmer light. But what use if
the pictures aren't sharp? How is yours at the lower end of the
light scale, or shooting on manual where you know your aperture?

I've also found out that the FED has a trapped-needle autoexposure
system. I've had a couple of trapped-needle cameras and found
their shutter release travel to be long and stiff, because of
all the parts inside the camera that have to move along with it.
Is the FED bad in this respect?

Thanks for reading, and for anything else you might have to say.
I'm just feeling very frustrated!
