A #14 welders glass is safe for eclipse viewing, but they are rather
poor optically.  And there are at least two different kinds of welders
glasses, green glass and gold colored plastic.

Also, because no welders glass or solar filter is calibrated, it is
important to take some test shots before the eclipse to home in on
the proper exposure, and to practice focussing and finding the sun
with the filter in place.
