I have an old booklet on stereo from the fifties somewhere at home which
contains some intersting ideas for equipment for taking and projecting
stereo.
However this guys prefered method of projection was to use the method you
are suggesting but it never seemed to get adopted . Personaly I found cross
viewing a lot a harder initialy although its just as easy now as parrallel
