P3D Complaints: Long Lines, Anonymity

- Subject: P3D Complaints: Long Lines, Anonymity

In a somewhat erratic discussion on the advantages of bad equipment
turning to flaming and non-issues (:-)), involving the P3d,
T3d _and_ S3d lists, so that I don't know if this was a thread and
on which list it was, one statement by a correspondent was an answer
on-list to a Moderator Letter send to her (or him?) privately by
George Themelis.
The correspondent (f/m), "ddd@xxxxxxxxxxxxx", wrote
(TECH-3D Digest 516, 4 Aug 1999):

Please limit your post's width to 75 columns or fewer so your posts will
look right to all list members. Here is what 75 columns looks like:
10 20 30 40 50 60 70

Bob Wier wrote to P3d and S3d (4 Aug 1999) (not T3d?) to explain that in
the _present_ version of the welcome messages the section on columns
did fall out due to restoring from an older version.
But in S3d Digest 866 he added:
>Probably the best thing to do is to try to limit your line lengths
>to 65 to 72 characters. If you use a mailer with word wrap,

My internet provider offers "webmail", so that I can read mail,
including the Lists, using a browser anywhere (library, institution,
Internet café) where an internet connection exists, I often use it.
However, word wrap is mostly NOT available.
So I indeed dislike lines extending over several screen widths,
extending over several screen widths, extending over several screen
widths, extending over several screen widths, extending over several
screen widths, extending over several screen widths, extending over
several screen widths.
So this was my first complaint (:-)), the second (because not
complaining will create too many non-issues :-)) is:
What also is not covered in the present welcome message, but should
be, in my humble opinion, is a rule that postings should come from a
_person_ with a _name_, mentioned in the email address or in the
signature.
Anonymous postings in my perspective are somewhat alienating, I never
know if it comes from a computer doing a Turing test on me.
(No insult to any special computer intended :-).
