I have a mid 70's IBM Selectric II typewriter which had sound
deadening foam which dried out and crumbled all down to the
bottom of the unit. It turned out that weather stripping foam
was just the ticket for a replacement. It comes in a variety of
widths, textures, and compressablity. I've no idea what the longevity 
might be, though.
