I do this also quite often.  It's a great strategy to get almost maximum 
depth of field and at the same time guard against pushing the limits of the 
system.  When shooting with a Realist or similar camera, try to resist using 
that rangefinder.  Knowledgeable use of scale focusing is superior for much 
stereo work IMO.  I do most of my shooting these days with twin SLRs.  The 
viewfinder is used almost exclusively for framing the shot, not for focusing!
