P3D Fungus and other issues

>>I concur with John Goodman's observations about the so-called 'archival'
>>qualities of Kodachrome. Having examined many old Kodachrome slides,
>>I've noted similar problems: off-color spots, fissures, fungus-like
>>growths etc. etc.

The problem could be that Kodak did not process the slides. Are they in
Kodak mounts? As for fissures (please explain further) - they could be
damage caused after processing. As for "Fungus like growths" This is not
really an archival issue. This problem can affect any image stored in less
than ideal conditions. The fissures might be from insect damage.

>>Question: are there any techniques for restoring Kodachrome images so
>>affected?

The Time Life series of photography books, specifically the book that talks
about preserving images, there is a great section on reclaiming lost
colors. In the hands of an expert, the results are stunning. I recommend
this book. The techniques will not handle physical damage, however.

In the early years, Kodak applied a lacquer to the slides they processed.
Often, this lacquer can be removed, and this also removes fine surface
scratches as well. You can restore images, but it is time consuming to do.
