I have a Nikon FE2 which a love, will never part with, etc. BUT ... I
almost never use it anymore. I've been spoiled by stereo, and I
figure why take one picture when, with almost no additional effort, I
could take two?

I'm currently using a twin rig originally built by Alan Lewis, using
two Ricoh Shotmaster point-and-shoot cameras. These have an
electronic shutter release, so there was no need to open the bodies to
wire them together.

I'd like to build something more high-end someday, using two automatic
SLRs or something but, frankly, I have no complaints with the results
I'm getting. There are occasional problem with slight out-of-sync
pairs, but I'd guess 90% or 95% of my shots are at least somewhat
successful, which is a much higher rate than I've gotten with any
other means.

I, too, would be interested in hearing recommendations of SLR cameras
which could be sync'ed effectively.
