I find 7p to work out well for me.  I shoot almost
exclusively within 6 feet of the subject.  Shooting 7p
(now with the belplasca, yippie!) allows me to crop
close ups into a 5p mount.  Also, now I have a
tendency to shoot with the subject horizontal, or add
more interesting items to the sides of the subject. 
More options.  That is really the reason.

You could get a Fed stereocamera from Steve Berezin. 
I think he sells them for under $300!
