I have always assumed that, when cross-viewing, your line-
of-sight from the left eye to the right image is the 
hypotenuse of a triangle with the interoccular distance
as the base and the distance to the image as the leg of
the triangle. At close distances the proportion of the
hypotenuse to the leg would be great and the corresponding
miniaturization would be the percentage of the leg to 
the hypotenuse. Sounds good anyway.
