Hi, Steve!

No, I don't believe you're missing anything; this should work, albeit
clumsily.  The only thing is, does saving an inch make that much
difference in the stereo effect?  I ran some experiments a few years ago
varying an interaxial between 1 and 2 inches using a slide bar on a
close up.  Much to my surprise, I found that, to my taste, the
subjective (apparent in the viewer) difference between the stereo
effects at 1.5 and 2 inches interaxials was very subtle. 

This makes me think that reducing your interaxial by only an inch may
not gain you enough of a reduction in the  hyper effect to be worth the
trouble. Before you expend time building the rig, you might want to run
some more extensive tests with a slide bar than I did, and judge for
yourself whether the difference is worth the added clumsiness.
