That's what I tried at first also, but I abandoned it because I found that
without a spacer of some sort between the two cameras I could not rely on a
firm enough connection to assure proper alignment. Also, I felt I needed a
frame of some sort to support a flash shoe and the remote button to fire both
cameras. So I compromized and went with the extra 10 mm interoccular
distance.

That's what I do, too.
