The orange in negative film is a dye applied differently to each color layer of
the film. This adjusts for the differences in density between each layer. The
fact that different amounts of orange are applied to each of the three or four
color layers makes it very difficult to remove in Photoshop. Two films where
the composite of all the layers show the same orange cast are probably entirely
different.

This is one reason there has been so much fooling around with what seem like
minimal film changes (esp. Kodak). They want to get all the films with the same
scanning characteristics.

This is the reason when you scan negatives you need to load the proper film type
into your scanner driver. That film type setting contains the information about
how much real image density and mask is in each layer.
