This might be the case for most simple point and shoot cameras,
but it is definitely not the case with good 35mm's. In my case the
RBT X3 which is based on the Ricoh XR-X3PF has performed
near flawlessly in a great variety of lighting conditions. One of its
greatest abilities is to correctly judge very low light conditions. I am
talking about night shots with exposures over eight seconds.
Now to qualify this I will say that I do use the AEL (auto exposure
lock) when I am shooting backlit scenes or scenes with a very large
range of lighting. I also shoot exclusively in center weighted
average meter mode and never use the spot meter mode.
