P3D Stereo Vivid 116

I just purchase my second TDC Stereo Vivid projector. 
The model with serial # 83769 has a plate on the front
which says: Stereo
            Vivid
The one with serial # 90975 has a plate on the front
which says: Stereo Vivid
            TDC Model 116 
Is there as difference in the projectors or was it
 just a plate change?

There is a plate on a spring, behind the lenses, which
closes and blocks the left lense. What is this for?
Both projectors have it. Mt first one had a piece of
metal holding it open so that the image can shine
through. Is there a better way to hold it open?
