With referenct to the discussion on the term stereopticon. The following is
extracted from the Glossary of terms compiled by Don Wratten and many others
for the ISU.

"The term stereopticon Was first used (1875) to identify a dissolving
twin-image magic lantern which could be used to convey information about
depth by the blended sequential presentation of a series of planar views of
a subject; later applied to some other kinds of non-stereo projectors.
This term should not be used to describe any stereographic viewing
equipment."
