Here are some of the names I have seen used over time for stereo viewers and
stereo views. All appear to be acceptable to the user who used them, and are
all being jumbled together in modern english. I find that when antique
shopping, I need to use MANY of these terms (and even more sometimes) to get
the idea of what I am looking for. I sometimes have to get to the 15th word
before they know what I am talking about because that is their name for it.
(right or wrong...)
FOR VIEWERS: Stereopticon, Stereoptican, Stereoptigon, Stereoptigan,
Stereoscope, Graphascope, Telebinocular, Holmes Viewer, Stereoscopic Viewer,
Stereographic Viewer, Viewmaster, View Master.
FOR STEREO VIEWS: Stereo Card, Stereocard, Stereo View, Stereoview, Stereo
Pair, Stereopair, Viewmaster cards.
IMHO it's no longer worth arguing about what is right or wrong in this
situation... English has LONG history of being an evolving language (again -
right or wrong) that breaks all sorts of it's own rules and this is a small,
murky area within the miriad problems... I am not sure these waters will
ever clear up... =)
