The correct reference for Chris Howes cave photography book is
"Images Below A Manual of Underground and Flash Photography".
Chris suggests using a 9v battery with a 1200 ohm resistor and
470mF capacitor. Several years ago it was still possible to 
get 22.5v bc batteries from an local electronic repair shop.
It have been several years since I used flashbulbs. I did score
a bunch of flashblubs on ebay last year and hope to use them in
near future. 

Charles Pflanze lets get together some weekend for a cave shoot.
I have 4 Fireflys and 6 EFs.
