P3D Re: 2D vs. 3D

At last a chance to breathe! Dry land appeared in the east
end of my basement tonight for the first time in over a
month! The water main break is located and repaired!

I like 3D because it is special, from shooting the pictures
to showing them. I don't know which is more of a conversation
piece, a Pentax beamsplitter on an OM-10 or a FED Stereo,
but it doesn't matter, because I have them both!

No matter how inconvenient (and it isn't _really_ inconvenient),
nothing can match the experience of viewing excellent Kodachromes
in a brilliant stereo viewer. Everybody from 6 to 60 is impressed.
_Very_ impressed. It's also a much more intimate, personal
experience than showing slides to a group with a projector.
I like that. I know I could do projection if I wanted to--the
stuff for beamsplitter projection is out there, even if it is
thin on the ground, but I choose not to. As for what the viewer
can make of the picture, if stereo makes him/her look at it in
a certain way, I like that. I generally have one thing I want
to get across in the picture--one central subject I want the
viewer to look at, and stereo enhances that.

As for being able to do things with them, you do have two slightly
different flat pictures if you want to go that route. I choose
the side that favors the subject and scan it. Then I can do
anything I want with it. Same goes for photographic uses--flat
prints from one negative, or from a slide--beamsplitter pairs
are half-frame, which is unusual, but the big places can all
handle it. Not that I'd want to very often, but it's always
available.

So if you shoot 3D, you have the best of both worlds!
