P3D Stitz Attachment Adapters

Speaking of Stitz adapters (as we were on the Sell-3D list), I've been
thinking about the problem that the Stitz seems to want at least a 55mm
focal length, and most normal Nikon lenses are 50mm. As a possible way
around this, I was thinking of just using a small tube to space the adapter
out from the lens. Specifically, since I'm using a 52mm to 49mm step-down
ring anyway, to try and jury rig a ring that's about 5mm or so long. This
should move the adapter farther out from the lens, and thus avoid the
problem where the outside edges of the mirrors show up in the frame.
My questions are:
1) Would this even work? Is liable to lead to vignetting on the image,
since the adapter is now being moved out on an opaque tube?
2) Any idea how to make such a thing? The ideal would be a ring which is
about 7mm wide, with 52mm ID male threads at one end, and 49mm OD female
threads at the other. I know I could just buy two 52-49 rings, and one
49-52, and hook them together, but that seems kind of ugly.
Thanks very much,
-pd
