Are you asking P3D "the conservator" or P3D "the stereophile"? The
conservator wants to preserve the original item, warts and all, as it
represents its kind and shows the common state of the art, materials,
etc.

The stereophile would like to see the image presented in the best way
possible. Since mounts have progressed markedly, re-mounting and
correcting alignment would seem to be the way to go.

But, why ask us? You answered your own question. You bought it as "the
stereophile", for the image, not to preserve a little piece of the past
'in situ'. You may have decreased its value *to an historian* by
remounting it, but if your intention is to view it and/or show it to
others, you've undoubtedly increased the pleasure of that experience.
