P3D Frosting of Halogen Bulbs

I am modifying a Brumberger rotary viewer to run on halogen
bulbs. This viewer holds 20 realist slides on a ferris wheel
like holder - It was originally designed to use two night-light
type bulbs similarly to those in a Kodaslide II viewer.

I have found both 10 and 20 watt - 12 volt halogen bulbs that
will work - with a rheostat to control the brightness, but the
design of the viewer makes it necessary to have the bulbs
directly behind each film chip with a plastic defuser in
between. I am getting some shadows from the filament holders
inside the bulbs. I am sure I would get more even
illumination if I could frost the bulbs. How could this be
done? - With sand paper? - If so, what kind?
