I made some with shorter FL lenses but some people could not fuse the
images. I compared the Virtual viewer with the original plastic lenses
which a large amount of people could not view, with the equivalent FL of
achromats, a 44mm fl of achromats and then with the 47mm achromats.
With the equivalent achromats a few more people could view the slides (I
believe this may be due to defects in the plastic lenses) but nowhere
near the amount that felt the 47mm fl were the easiest to view. The
number of people that felt the 47mm achromats were the best far
outnumbered the other lenses. In fact I have gotten some emails from
people who said they could not view the images with the original version
of the Virtual Viewer and they could with ours.

It seemed that without focussing and interocular adjustment the longer
focal lengths accommodate more viewers. I think this is why the Model L
was chosen and why so many people have trouble with the virtual viewer
as it is currently offered.
