P3D Re: The Stereo Glossary

Thanks to Donald Wratten for stepping out of the shadows briefly and into
the glaring headlights of Photo3D. The project sounds honest and not
overly ambitious - I hope that you find it well-received when it hits the
press.
I think this is a partial victory for me, as it seems that the "limited"
sense of orthostereo, with "tautomorphic" (holding the place of my
"anthropostereo" or "normal" ortho), will be a part of that glossary?
This, I think, is bad news for George, who is content with the classic
sense of ortho found in most books available to the general stereo crowd,
his own included. But I'm sure he will adjust - as gods are adept at
doing! ;-)
I am a bit puzzled on the question of "promulgating" the glossary. It
appears to me that newcomers to stereo are not the dominant group in the
ISU. In fact, as I look at names I recognize in the membership list, it
appears to be the Land of the Intellectual Giants. I share some of
Larry's concern that if this glossary represents basic, important
knowledge about the terms and concepts of stereo, that it may take some
time to trickle down to the hoi polloi, and in what form it will arrive is
anybody's guess. I don't share the view of the Internet as the great
democratic font of public wisdom, though, having such a tenuous grip on
web access myself. There are still a lot of cyber-have-nots in the world,
and pulling together a coherent education online while your ISP's meter is
running can be a costly deal.
The question is, is the ISU there chiefly to build membership
subscriptions, or to serve as an "authoritative body" on stereoscopic
matters (if not the latter, its efforts to promulgate nomenclature may
quickly become ridiculous!)? I think the membership should have first
crack at the information through the subscription, then, after a decent
interval, members of this list and others should do everything they can to
learn and use the terminology suggested - in solidarity with the good old
ISU! Otherwise the glossary will be one designed for easy assimilation by
newcomers, left only an obscure curiosity, or at best a private vocabulary
of the small gang of ISU members who presumably already know it all.
(Speaking as a know-it-all member myself.)
Alternatively, we could begin an agressive online drive to recruit members
to the ISU - bringing the "horse to the water" as it were.
FWIW
Bruce.
