P3D Re: Moral responsibility?

This week we are back to moral/ethical values and art ("rules" of
composition). Can't stay out of the murky waters, can we? ;-)

Laws make things easy: a moral evaluation is made for us - a kind of
base-line conduct guide that society says "thou shalt not" go below. But
where the law is silent or incomplete or unjust, we are left to our own
devices, and have no law to hide behind. Rather than asking what your
responsibility is to the unseen family, how about asking your
responsibility to yourself?

I say, if there is a reasonable chance of finding the family, go for it.
You will likely have an interesting time tracking them down, honing your
skills as a researcher in the history of the images you collect and sell -
a favor to yourself. You will likely hear an interesting story from
whomever you find about the photographer and the people pictured - a favor
to yourself. You'll get a chance to explain your enjoyment of such images
to them, perhaps sparking their interest in stereo, in your collecting
efforts, and impressing them with your conscientious concern for humans
unknown to you - a favor to yourself. They may gratefully receive the
images from you, which will make you feel and seem a noble fellow, or they
may make them a gift to you when they see the sincerity of your interest,
and even throw in the rest of the collection from their attics, and call
you their friend - in either case a favor to yourself. You could make an
interesting story of it all to the P3D maillist, wowing us all with your
adventurous and generous spirit - a favor to yourself. And you could
then, whether you succeed or fail in your search, go on with a clear
conscience, a fresh experience, and unsullied enjoyment of your hobby - a
favor to yourself.

In summary, my advice is - be selfish and see what happens!

FWIW,
Bruce
