Easy.  Suppose you wanted to depict departure.  Then the subject moving towards
the edge will make sense.  You might even want to cut part of the subject off.
Naturally, the bulk of the picture should show some motivation for the departure
or otherwise balance the tension created.  Generally, I would not agree that
rules are made to be broken.  But photography is different - good photographs
have tension.  What is the rule of thirds but the breaking of the obvious rule
that the center of interest should be in the center?  Now if you really want to
be subversive, put the subject in the center!
